There are days when you can get a taxi in the GTA within
seconds of stepping on the pavement. There are other days when you can spend
more than 20 minutes waving down cabs and have to trudge to the nearest station
to catch the metro.
What happened to all the taxis?
If you’ve used GTA taxi services before, you’ll know
that there’s no way of knowing whether you’ll be able to get a car or not until
you actually try to hail one.
If you've been trying to hail a cab for the past half hour
and are wondering why none bothers to stop you may want to consider the
following factors.
- You're not in the right area
The fact is that cabs aren’t
accessible from every part of the GTA. There are some areas where getting a
vehicle is as easy as stepping onto the pavement. There are other areas where even sighting a cab is a great feat.
- You can’t agree on a fare
One of the most common complaints amongst drivers and
passengers is having disagreements about fare. It is becoming increasingly
difficult for passengers and drivers to strike deals that are agreeable to both
parties.
- There are restrictions to the number of cars in the area
The industry is highly
competitive. Local authorities have come up with various ways of ensuring that
drivers can still earn a decent livelihood. There are various controls that
have been put in place including limiting the number of vehicles in any given
area.
- The time
What time are you looking for a
ride? Not all services offer 24 x 7availability in all parts of the city. You may not be able to get a
vehicle if you're looking to hail one at midnight outside the busy metropolitan
area.
- You want to go outside the metropolitan area
The chances of a driver getting a passenger on their way
back from the outer reaches of the metropolitan area are slim. Regulations
don’t allow drivers to charge passengers extra to recover the cost of the
return journey. They would therefore prefer not to make the trip as it would
not be profitable for them.
